Headlam Hall is a great base for enjoying walks in the countryside of lower Teesdale. We have a selection of suggested walks in our 'walking trails' leaflet or you can just head out and do your own thing on the local lanes and public footpaths. A short drive up the dale and the walking terrain changes from rolling countryside to rugged fells and open moorland.
There are some excellent circular routes for keen cyclists and there is also the option of hiring one of our e-bikes for a day out. We have a suggested route on quiet rural roads that includes optional 'pit-stops' at cafes and pubs along the way. Our e-bikes are easy to ride and take the sting out of the hills so you can just enjoy the fresh air and great views. They have a range of around 50 miles so plenty for a good tour of the Durham and North Yorkshire local countryside.
Just 4 miles away is the impressive Raby Castle which has seen significant investment over the last few years making it a leading visitor attraction of the north. We also have the busy town of Darlington 8 miles to the east and the historic market town of Barnard Castle, home to the Bowes Museum, 9 miles to the west. A similar distance north is Bishop Auckland which is the home of the Auckland Project. This is another attraction that has seen massive investment and is now a leading heritage destination.
The surrounding area provides some wonderful scenic drives taking in the unique dales landscapes, charming villages and with attractions along the way. We have a selection of tried and tested routes and there is also the option in the summer season of hiring one of Headlam Hall's classic cars to make it an especially memorable experience.
We are just a few miles from the river Tees which boasts superb fishing for Trout and Grayling. Our local guides (one of which is a part-time greenkeeper on our golf course) are also fully qualified instructors so whether you are an experiences angler or a complete novice they can look after you on a memorable day out. You do not even need any equipment as everything can be provided including the necessary permits.
